Company Profile

Mel N Morris Jones, Architectural Carvers, was set up in Kilmersdon, Somerset, U.K. in 1981 by Mel Morris Jones after he moved from London, leaving his job as Head Carver at Westminster Abbey.

We are specialist architectural carvers who for the past fifteen years have been Bath & Portland Natural Stone's principal carvers - they are one of the U.K's largest and most respected masonry companies. However, we are an independent firm and undertake contracts for a number of other companies, cathedrals, councils and architects as well as providing a growing percentage of our sculptures to members of the general public.

We are a relatively small workshop of very good trained carvers, expanding to a larger team when necessary by using the best carvers we know around the country - first in our workshop, then when we are completely satisfied with what they are producing, in their own premises. In this way and by keeping our overheads to a minimum, we are able to produce really top quality work at a very competitive price and yet retain the flexibility to undertake major contracts when required.

Just as important as the quality of work, we are fully aware of the need to fit in with production dates and can be relied upon to keep to time schedules as required.

We can also supply and fix worked or machined masonry, though this is usually only undertaken if there is some proportion of carving within the job. Also woodcarving, lettercutting, clay modeling, drawing and design work can be provided and sculpture can be produced in practically any medium and to any size.

Although we are usually engaged in producing a diverse range of carvings for the fabric of some of Britain's most famous and beautiful buildings, we have also provided various items for garden designers and landscape architects, and an interesting assortment of individuals, amongst whom number a Bishop, a Beatle, an Earl and our milkman.

Exported carvings now amount to approximately 8% of our work, and this figure is increasing all the time - it costs us only a little more to ship items to the U.S.A. than it does to send a load up to London!

Sculpture in natural materials is the direction in which we are increasingly aiming - you think of something and we can carve it!!
